Devil with large fist
The official state bird of New Jersey, my home state, is the eastern goldfinch. Our state mammal is the horse. Our inoperative state slogan, voted in by New Jerseyans in , is "Come See for Yourself," which sounds, not inappropriately, like something a sweaty man cutting the Cinnabon line at a turnpike rest area might shout while gesturing to his crotch. Practically everyone in southern New Jersey knows of one or more persons who have seen the devil, but very few will acknowledge personal acquaintance.

Ecological connections between surface waters and the deep ocean remain poorly studied despite the high biomass of fishes and squids residing at depths beyond the euphotic zone. These animals likely support pelagic food webs containing a suite of predators that include commercially important fishes and marine mammals.

The Creepy Anglerfish Comes to Light. (Just Don’t Get Too Close.)
Whale sharks are one of a select group of large marine animals that scientists like Thorrold, of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, have signed up as ocean-going research assistants. They have revealed remarkable journeys across entire oceans, and they have shown that diving deep is pretty much ubiquitous among large marine predators of all kinds. To function at such depths, deep-diving species have evolved an array of anatomical and physiological adaptations — thick, insulating blubber, for instance, or blood vessels transformed into heat-exchange systems, collapsible lungs and oxygen-storing muscles, and ultra-sensitive eyes, to name but a few. But what drove these great predators to acquire their remarkable diving skills? For most biologists, the answer is a no-brainer: Food.
